Prague in early December is cold, often snowy, and the Old Town Square Christmas market is at full strength — which makes a two-day Microsoft platform conference here an easy trip to justify extending. The city survived the twentieth century architecturally intact, so the Gothic and Baroque core is genuine rather than reconstructed. Czech engineering talent is a significant draw in its own right.
Vaclav Havel Airport (PRG) sits about 17 km west of the centre, reached by bus and metro in roughly 45 minutes or by taxi in half an hour. The integrated metro, tram and bus network is inexpensive and efficient, with trams particularly useful across the historic core where the metro does not reach. Direct trains connect Prague with Berlin, Vienna and Bratislava in four to five hours.

Old Town Square Christmas Market. Wooden stalls beneath the astronomical clock and the Tyn Church, selling trdelnik, mulled wine and glassware. It is crowded and unashamedly touristic, but the setting is hard to beat. An hour after dark, and the smaller Wenceslas Square market is a quieter alternative.
Charles Bridge. A fourteenth-century stone bridge lined with baroque statuary, connecting the old town to Mala Strana. Cross it at dawn to have it essentially to yourself. Thirty minutes, and the view back toward the castle is the classic Prague image.
Vysehrad. A hilltop fort south of the centre with a neo-Gothic basilica, a cemetery holding many Czech cultural figures, and ramparts overlooking the Vltava. Almost entirely free of visitors in winter. Ninety minutes, and it is directly served by its own metro station.
What currency should I bring?
The Czech koruna. Cards are widely accepted, but avoid the exchange booths in the tourist centre, which offer poor rates.
How do I get in from the airport?
Bus 119 to Nadrazi Veleslavin then metro line A takes around 45 minutes. Taxis and rideshare reach the centre in about 30 minutes.
Is it snowy in early December?
Snow is common though not guaranteed, and temperatures usually sit around or below freezing. Footwear with grip is sensible on cobbles.
