Amsterdam's centre of business gravity has moved south to the Zuidas, a district of towers around the Zuid station where the international corporate presence sits. Late September brings damp, mild weather near seventeen degrees and early sunsets. The advantage of basing a visit here rather than in the canal belt is speed — Schiphol is eight minutes away by train, and the museums and parks of Oud-Zuid are a short tram ride north rather than a trek.
Trains from Schiphol (AMS) reach Amsterdam Zuid in roughly eight minutes and Amsterdam Centraal in fifteen to twenty, running frequently throughout the day and at reduced intervals overnight. Zuid is also on metro lines 50 and 51 and the North-South line 52, which crosses under the IJ. International rail services from Brussels, Paris and London arrive at Centraal.
Skip the taxi queue — pre-book a fixed-price airport transfer with Welcome Pickups. Exploring beyond the city? compare rental cars on Auto Europe.
Network performance across the Randstad is consistently high, including underground on the metro. For attendees from outside the European Union, a prepaid data eSIM is the cheapest way to stay connected without depending on venue WiFi. Set up an eSIM with Airalo before you board and you're online the moment you land.
Van Gogh Museum. The largest collection of the artist's work anywhere, arranged chronologically across four floors at Museumplein, fifteen minutes north of the Zuidas by tram. Tickets are timed and must be booked online in advance. Ninety minutes is enough, and the last entry slots of the day are the least crowded. Tickets on Tiqets →
Vondelpark. The city's main park stretches west from Museumplein through nearly fifty hectares of ponds, lawns and cycle paths. It is the default running and cycling route for the southern districts. Autumn colour is well underway by late September, and the open-air theatre season has usually ended by then.
NEMO Science Museum. A green copper hull rising over the water east of Centraal, with five floors of hands-on physics, chemistry and engineering exhibits. The stepped roof terrace is free to access and gives one of the better views over the old harbour. Two hours inside is plenty for adults. Tickets on Go City →
NDSM wharf. A former shipyard across the IJ, reached by free ferry from behind Centraal in about fifteen minutes. It now holds street art, studios in converted industrial sheds and waterfront cafés. It feels nothing like the centre. Best on a dry afternoon, since much of it is open ground.
Is Zuid a good base compared with the centre?
For a business trip, often yes. It is eight minutes from Schiphol by train and well connected by metro, though the canal district has far more character in the evening.
How do I pay for public transport?
Tap a contactless bank card or phone directly on the readers when boarding and alighting trams, metros and trains. No separate travel card is required.
What should I pack?
Highs around fifteen to eighteen degrees Celsius with wind and regular showers. A waterproof jacket and shoes that handle wet cobbles are the practical essentials.
