The Lanes and North Laine. Two distinct districts, easily confused: the Lanes are narrow medieval alleys of jewellers and pubs, while North Laine is a grid of record shops, vintage clothing and independent cafés. Together they absorb an easy two hours and are where most conference socialising happens.
Devil's Dyke and the South Downs. A dry chalk valley on the escarpment above the town gives a wide view over the Weald, reachable by bus in about half an hour from the centre. The ridge walks are exposed and often muddy in November, so proper footwear matters, but the air after a day of talks is worth it.
Is a car needed?
No, and it is a liability. Brighton parking is scarce and expensive, the centre is walkable end to end in half an hour, and buses cover the rest with contactless payment on board.
What weather should be expected?
Highs of 10 to 12°C, frequent rain and strong winds off the Channel. Seafront gusts make umbrellas useless, so a hooded waterproof is the practical choice.
Can the conference be done as a day trip from London?
