Utrecht in early October is cool and often damp, with the canal-side terraces still in use on drier afternoons. Dom Tower and Domkerk. The tallest church tower in the Netherlands, standing separate from its cathedral since a storm destroyed the nave in 1674. Oudegracht wharf cellars. The old canal runs through the centre with a lower wharf level of former storage cellars, now cafes and restaurants. Walking the towpath end to end takes about forty minutes. Doing it at dusk, when the cellar windows light up below street level, shows the arrangement at its best.
Museum Speelklok. A collection of self-playing musical instruments, from street organs to automated orchestras, demonstrated live on regular guided tours. Ninety minutes including a tour is right. It is genuinely unusual rather than a filler museum, and the demonstrations are what make the visit worthwhile.
Rietveld Schröder House. A 1924 De Stijl house on the city's eastern edge, listed by UNESCO and visitable only by pre-booked guided tour. The interior's movable partitions are the reason to go.
