Amsterdam in late October is dark by six, frequently wet, and windy along the canals — conditions the Dutch treat as unremarkable and the city is entirely built to absorb. The conference draws an international enterprise audience to a compact capital where cycling remains the dominant mode of transport and the canal ring, largely unchanged since the seventeenth century, is a short walk from most central venues.
Schiphol (AMS) is one of Europe's principal hubs and connects to Amsterdam Centraal by direct train in 15 to 20 minutes, running very frequently including overnight. Trams, metro and buses cover the city, and contactless bank cards work directly as tickets across the network. Cycling is the fastest way around the centre, though October weather makes it a mixed proposition for visitors.
Skip the taxi queue — pre-book a fixed-price airport transfer with Welcome Pickups. Exploring beyond the city? compare rental cars on Auto Europe.
Dutch mobile networks are fast and consistent across Amsterdam, including on the trains from Schiphol. An eSIM activated before landing means working navigation and transport apps from the platform at the airport station. Set up an eSIM with Airalo before you board and you're online the moment you land.
Rijksmuseum. The Dutch national museum covers eight centuries with the Golden Age painters as its core. Booking ahead is effectively required. Two to three hours does it justice; the surrounding Museumplein connects directly to the Van Gogh Museum next door. Tickets on Tiqets →
Anne Frank House. The preserved hiding place on the Prinsengracht is among Europe's most affecting museum visits and sells out well in advance — tickets release on a fixed schedule online only. Allow ninety minutes, and expect the experience to be sobering rather than sightseeing.
Jordaan district. West of the centre, a former working-class quarter of narrow streets, small canals and independent bars. It absorbs an evening comfortably and is where the city feels least touristed. October rain makes its brown cafés particularly appealing.
Canal cruise. An hour on the water gives the clearest sense of how the seventeenth-century canal ring was planned. Covered boats run regardless of weather, which in late October is the sensible choice. Evening departures show the lit bridges to best effect. Tickets on Go City →
How do I reach the city from Schiphol?
Direct trains run to Amsterdam Centraal in 15 to 20 minutes, very frequently throughout the day and with a reduced overnight service.
Do I need a transport card?
No. Contactless bank cards work directly on trams, metro, buses and trains, so no separate ticket purchase is necessary.
What is the weather like in October?
Cool, wet and often windy, with early darkness. A properly waterproof coat is more useful than an umbrella given the wind along the canals.
