Anne Frank House. The canal-side building where the Frank family hid, preserved as a museum with the annexe largely as it was. The Jordaan. The former working-class quarter west of the centre, now narrow streets, courtyard hofjes and small bars, at its best on a March evening when the terraces reopen. No tickets, no schedule - two hours of wandering, ideally ending at a brown cafe. Noordermarkt runs on Saturday mornings.
NEMO Science Museum. A green copper ship-shaped building near Centraal, hands-on and unusually good for adults despite the family billing. Direct trains reach Amsterdam Centraal in 15-20 minutes and run every few minutes throughout the day.
Should I rent a bike?
If you are comfortable in traffic, yes - it is the fastest way around the centre and the infrastructure is excellent. Stay off the tram tracks and always lock the frame to something fixed.
