San Jose sits at the southern end of the Bay, and late September is arguably its best month — dry, bright, and consistently in the mid-twenties without the fog that grips San Francisco. For a developer audience the draw is proximity: the campuses that defined modern computing are within a short drive, and the city's downtown grid keeps hotels, transit and restaurants close together. Evenings cool quickly once the sun drops behind the Santa Cruz Mountains.
Norman Y. Mineta San José International (SJC) is barely six kilometres from downtown, a ten-minute ride or a free VTA connection via the Airport Flyer to the Metro/Airport light rail station. San Francisco International (SFO) is around sixty-five kilometres north; Caltrain from Millbrae to San Jose Diridon takes roughly ninety minutes. Oakland (OAK) is a third option, best reached by car.
Skip the taxi queue — pre-book a fixed-price airport transfer with Kiwitaxi. Exploring beyond the city? compare rental cars on EconomyBookings.
Mobile data across Silicon Valley is dependable, but conference halls and hotel lobbies get congested during breaks. Travellers from outside the United States generally save money by loading a data eSIM instead of enabling carrier roaming. Set up an eSIM with Airalo before you board and you're online the moment you land.
Computer History Museum. In nearby Mountain View, roughly twenty-five minutes north, the museum holds a working PDP-1, a Babbage Difference Engine reconstruction and a substantial exhibit on the personal computing era. Allow two to three hours. Guided volunteer tours run on most weekday afternoons and are worth timing a visit around. Tickets on Tiqets →
Winchester Mystery House. The sprawling Victorian mansion west of downtown is best known for its staircases that end at ceilings and doors that open onto walls. Standard mansion tours run about an hour on a fixed schedule, so booking ahead matters. It is a short ride from the convention area and pairs well with a late afternoon. Tickets on Tiqets →
Japantown San Jose. One of only three historic Japantowns remaining in the United States, occupying a few blocks around Jackson Street north of downtown. It is small enough to cover in an hour on foot and has long-running family restaurants, a taiko studio and the Japanese American Museum of San Jose.
Santana Row. An open-air shopping and dining district about four kilometres west, built as a walkable European-style street. It draws a steady evening crowd and has a wide spread of restaurants at different price points, which makes it a practical fallback when downtown reservations are full.
Is public transport usable without a car?
Within downtown, yes — VTA light rail and buses cover the core and the airport connection. Reaching Mountain View or Cupertino is far quicker with a car or ride-hail.
What should I pack for the weather?
Warm dry days around twenty-four to twenty-seven degrees Celsius, but temperatures can fall ten degrees or more after dark. A light jacket for evenings is genuinely needed.
How far is San Francisco?
About an hour by car without traffic, or roughly ninety minutes on Caltrain from San Jose Diridon station. Peak commute periods can easily double the driving time.
