Build It Summit opens in Paris on the first days of December, as the city moves into its winter mode: department store windows along Boulevard Haussmann are animated for Christmas, market chalets appear in the squares, and cafe terraces run their heaters. Temperatures are cold but seldom severe, and visitor numbers at the major museums drop well below summer levels. Charles de Gaulle (CDG) is the principal international airport, linked to Gare du Nord and Chatelet-Les Halles by RER B suburban trains in roughly 30 to 40 minutes; taxis to the centre operate on fixed fares and take 45 minutes or more in traffic. Covered passages of the Right Bank. Nineteenth-century glass-roofed arcades such as Galerie Vivienne, Passage des Panoramas and Passage Jouffroy thread between the Palais-Royal and the Grands Boulevards. They shelter bookshops, stamp dealers, wine bars and bistros, and provide a rain-proof walking route of around an hour. December decorations make them especially appealing, and entry is free.
Christmas windows and the Tuileries market. The grand department stores on Boulevard Haussmann unveil elaborate animated window displays each winter, and the rooftop terrace at one of them offers a free panorama towards the Eiffel Tower. A short walk south, a seasonal market with food stalls and rides usually fills part of the Tuileries Garden. An early evening visit catches everything illuminated.
How cold is Paris in early December?
Daytime highs generally range from 5 to 9 degrees Celsius with grey skies and occasional rain; snow is uncommon. A warm coat, scarf and waterproof shoes are enough for walking between venues.
Is the metro the best way to get around?
Yes. The network is dense, frequent and usually faster than taxis in central Paris, and tickets can be loaded onto a phone or a rechargeable card. Walking between neighbouring districts is often just as quick.
Do cards work everywhere?
Contactless cards are accepted almost universally, including at bakeries and market stalls, though a few small establishments set a minimum amount. Carrying a little cash in euros covers the exceptions.
