Intel Museum. In nearby Santa Clara, this free museum traces semiconductor manufacturing from early integrated circuits to modern process nodes, with real wafer and lithography exhibits. It is genuinely relevant background for an embedded audience. Around an hour, and it is quietest on weekday mornings.
Ed R. Levin County Park. Directly above Milpitas in the foothills, with trails climbing to views across the entire south bay. January rain leaves the hills unusually green. Trails can be muddy after storms, so choose footwear accordingly; a short loop takes about two hours.
Alviso Marina County Park. A former port town swallowed by the salt marshes at the bay's southern tip, now a flat trail network through evaporation ponds full of wintering shorebirds. It is strange, quiet and photogenic. Best in the hour before sunset, and around ninety minutes on foot.
Great Mall. Built inside a former Ford assembly plant, this large outlet centre is the region's default wet-afternoon destination and sits minutes from the Milpitas conference hotels. Practical rather than scenic, but useful if January rain closes down outdoor options. Allow as long as patience holds.
