The South Bank and Westminster stretch of London hosts most of the capital's engineering-leadership events, drawn by conference centres within walking distance of Waterloo. Mid-October brings early dusk and steady drizzle, though the riverside walk between Westminster Bridge and Blackfriars stays worthwhile in any weather. This is the institutional London of government, national theatres, and museums rather than the startup east.
Heathrow (LHR) reaches central London in thirty to fifty minutes on the Elizabeth or Piccadilly lines. Gatwick (LGW) links to Victoria in about thirty minutes by express service, and to Blackfriars and London Bridge on Thameslink, which is often more convenient for South Bank venues. Waterloo, Westminster, and Southwark stations serve the area directly. Contactless payment works across all TfL services.

London has dense network coverage above and increasingly below ground. An eSIM is the practical option for visitors, avoiding both roaming bills and high-street SIM queues. Set up an eSIM with Airalo before you board and you're online the moment you land.
British Museum. Free entry to a collection spanning the Rosetta Stone, Assyrian reliefs, and the Parthenon sculptures. Two to three hours covers a focused route; the whole museum cannot be done in a day. Russell Square and Holborn stations are closest. Weekday late openings are far quieter than weekend afternoons.
Southbank Centre and the riverside walk. A stretch of arts venues, book stalls under Waterloo Bridge, and open terraces running east from the London Eye. The walk to Tate Modern takes about twenty-five minutes. Free foyer spaces stay open through the evening, making it a reliable option after a conference day ends.
Design Museum. In Kensington, a short Underground ride west, covering contemporary product, graphic, and industrial design. The free permanent collection is well suited to a technical audience. Ninety minutes covers it, and Holland Park immediately behind offers a short walk in whatever daylight October provides. Tickets on Go City →
Kew Gardens. The botanic gardens at the western end of the District line, roughly forty minutes from the centre. The Victorian glasshouses and the treetop walkway are the highlights. Half a day is right. Autumn colour across the arboretum peaks around mid-to-late October, making this the season to go. Tickets on Tiqets →
Which station should I aim for on the South Bank?
Waterloo serves it best, with Westminster, Southwark, and London Bridge all within a short walk along the river.
Are London museums free?
Most national museums, including the British Museum and Tate Modern, have free permanent collections. Special exhibitions are ticketed.
How much daylight is there in mid-October?
Sunset falls around six in the evening and drops earlier through the month, so plan outdoor visits before or during the conference lunch break.
