Amman in late April is at its best: spring temperatures in the mid-70s Fahrenheit, hillsides still green from winter rain, and none of the summer heat that arrives in June. The Jordanian capital spreads across a series of hills, with the modern business districts of Abdali and Shmeisani holding most conference hotels. For a regional gathering of regulators and bankers it is a well-connected and comparatively relaxed base.
Queen Alia International (AMM) sits about 35 kilometres south of the city, roughly 40 minutes by taxi or the Sariyah airport bus, which runs to North Terminal and Tabarbour. Taxis and ride-hailing apps are inexpensive and the standard way to move around the city; the hills make walking between districts impractical. Agree a fare or use the meter before setting off.
Skip the taxi queue — pre-book a fixed-price airport transfer with Kiwitaxi. Exploring beyond the city? compare rental cars on EconomyBookings.
Jordanian mobile data is fast and cheap, but activating a local plan on arrival costs time you will not want to spend. An eSIM configured before you fly has you online as you leave the terminal. Set up an eSIM with Airalo before you board and you're online the moment you land.
Amman Citadel. The hilltop Jabal al-Qala holds Roman, Byzantine and Umayyad remains, including the Temple of Hercules and the Umayyad Palace, with the best panorama over the city. Allow ninety minutes. Late afternoon light is ideal and the site is directly above the Roman Theatre downtown.
Rainbow Street and Jabal Amman. The old residential quarter has been the city's cafe and gallery district for two decades. Walk the length of Rainbow Street in an hour, stopping at Wild Jordan for the view across the valley. Friday mornings bring the Souk Jara market between late spring and autumn.
Jerash. One of the best-preserved Roman provincial cities anywhere, 50 kilometres north and an easy half-day trip by taxi or organised tour. Budget three hours on site for the colonnaded street, hippodrome and the two theatres. April weather makes the walk between ruins genuinely pleasant.
The Dead Sea. An hour west and 400 metres below sea level, reachable as an afternoon or a full day from the city. Day passes at the resort beaches include changing facilities. Bring sandals for the salt crust and avoid shaving beforehand, which every visitor learns once.
Do I need a visa for Jordan?
Many nationalities can obtain a visa on arrival at Queen Alia International, and the Jordan Pass bought before travel covers the visa fee plus entry to Petra and Jerash. Check the current requirements for your passport before booking.
How do I get around the city?
Taxis and ride-hailing apps are the practical choice and are inexpensive. Amman is built across steep hills, so walking between neighbourhoods is harder than a map suggests.
What is the weather like in late April?
Spring conditions, with daytime highs around the mid-70s Fahrenheit and cool evenings that call for a jacket. Rain is uncommon by that point in the season.
