Prague in early October is crisp and clear, with autumn colour along the Vltava and the summer crowds noticeably thinned. Charles Bridge at dawn. The fourteenth-century bridge is impassably crowded by mid-morning, but at first light it is nearly empty and the statues catch low sun from the east. Prague Castle complex. The largest ancient castle complex in the world, holding St Vitus Cathedral, the Old Royal Palace, and Golden Lane. Tram 22 climbs to the upper gate, saving the walk. Old Town Square and the Astronomical Clock. The clock performs on the hour to a large audience, though the tower climb behind it is the better value. Vyšehrad. A fortress above the river south of the centre, with ramparts, a neo-Gothic basilica, and the cemetery where Dvořák and Smetana are buried. Metro line C reaches it in ten minutes from the centre. Two hours suits a full circuit, and the walls give a quieter river view than anywhere downtown.
