November in San Francisco is cool and often clearer than summer, once the fog season has passed - days around 15C with the first rains of the season arriving. A compact open-source summit suits the city well: the peninsula's core is only seven miles square and BART plus Muni cover most of what delegates need. Pack layers, because the temperature difference between a sunny street and a shaded one is genuinely significant here.
San Francisco International (SFO) connects to downtown by BART in about 30 minutes, running directly from the international terminal. Oakland (OAK) links via BART too and is often cheaper; San Jose (SJC) is an hour south and better suited to South Bay stays. Within the city, Muni buses and the metro cover the neighbourhoods, and a Clipper card or contactless payment works across all of it.

Golden Gate Park and the de Young. A park larger than Central Park, holding the de Young museum, the California Academy of Sciences and the Japanese Tea Garden. Alcatraz Island. The former federal penitentiary in the bay, reached by ferry from Pier 33 with an excellent audio tour narrated by former inmates and guards. Tickets routinely sell out two to three weeks ahead, so book before you travel. Allow three hours door to door.
Ferry Building Marketplace. A restored 1898 terminal on the Embarcadero, now a food hall of local producers with a farmers market on Saturdays. It is a short walk from downtown hotels and a reliable lunch or early-evening stop. An hour, more if the market is on.
Mission District murals. Balmy Alley and Clarion Alley hold decades of Latino political mural work, a few blocks from 24th Street Mission BART. Combine with the Mission's taquerias for the best-value meal in the city. Ninety minutes on foot; go in daylight.
