GitHub Universe falls in the last days of October, which is quietly the best weather San Francisco gets. The summer fog that swallows the bay in July has retreated, late-October afternoons often reach the low twenties, and the light over the water is at its clearest. The conference draws a large hybrid audience into the SoMa blocks south of Market, a neighbourhood of converted warehouses that empties fast after dark.
San Francisco International (SFO) links to downtown by BART in about 30 minutes, with trains every ten to fifteen minutes to the Powell and Montgomery stations. Oakland (OAK) needs a BART connector and roughly 45 minutes; San José (SJC) is closer to an hour by Caltrain and transfer. Ride-hailing from SFO to SoMa runs 25 to 40 minutes depending on traffic.
Skip the taxi queue — pre-book a fixed-price airport transfer with Welcome Pickups. Exploring beyond the city? compare rental cars on EconomyBookings.
Coverage downtown is strong, but BART tunnels and some basement conference halls drop out entirely. Visitors from outside the US usually find an eSIM cheaper than carrier roaming for a week-long trip. Set up an eSIM with Airalo before you board and you're online the moment you land.
SFMOMA. Seven floors of modern and contemporary art sit a few blocks from the SoMa conference district, which makes it the most convenient serious museum in the city. The Fisher collection of postwar painting is the anchor, and the ground-floor galleries are free to enter. Two hours is a comfortable visit. Tickets on Tiqets →
Ferry Building Marketplace. The restored terminal at the foot of Market Street holds oyster bars, bakeries and cheese counters, with a farmers' market outside on Saturday mornings. It is a ten-minute walk or one streetcar stop from downtown hotels and works well for an early breakfast before a morning keynote.
Golden Gate Park and the de Young. The park runs from the Haight almost to the ocean, holding the de Young art museum, the Japanese Tea Garden and the Botanical Garden. The observation tower at the de Young is free and gives a full sweep of the western city. Allow half a day and take a Muni bus out. Tickets on Go City →
Cable cars and Powell Street. The Powell-Hyde line climbs from the downtown turntable over Nob Hill to the bay, and it remains a working part of the transit system rather than a museum piece. Queues at the terminus are long by mid-morning; boarding at a stop partway up the hill usually gets a seat faster.
What is the weather actually like in late October?
This is San Francisco's warmest, clearest stretch, with highs around 18 to 21°C and little rain before November. Evenings still drop sharply once the sun sets, so a jacket is needed after sessions.
How do fares work on local transport?
BART and Muni both accept contactless cards and phones directly at the gate, so no separate ticket is required. Clipper remains available for anyone wanting a stored-value option.
Is the conference district walkable at night?
SoMa around the convention halls is busy during the day and much quieter after dark, and the blocks toward the Tenderloin are best avoided on foot late. Short ride-hailing trips are cheap and widely used for evening events.
