The civil rights history here is not a museum abstraction but attached to specific streets and buildings a short walk from the centre.
Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International (ATL) is the busiest airport in the world and, usefully, has a MARTA rail station inside the terminal. The Red and Gold lines reach downtown in about twenty minutes for a low flat fare, which is faster and far cheaper than a taxi at peak. MARTA also links downtown with Midtown and Buckhead; a rental car is unnecessary for a downtown conference.

Martin Luther King Jr National Historical Park. The birth home, Ebenezer Baptist Church and the King Center sit together on Auburn Avenue, a fifteen-minute walk east of downtown. Entry to the National Park Service sites is free. Allow two hours, and check the birth home tour schedule on arrival.
BeltLine Eastside Trail. A converted rail corridor now forming a paved path through the eastern neighbourhoods, lined with street art, breweries and the Ponce City Market food hall. Walking from Piedmont Park to Krog Street takes around an hour. Free and open at all hours.

How do I get from the airport to downtown?
Take MARTA rail directly from inside the airport terminal. The journey to downtown takes about twenty minutes and costs a low flat fare.
Is a car needed?
No for downtown, Midtown and the BeltLine, all of which are covered by rail and walking. A car helps only for the outer suburbs.
What is the weather like in mid-November?
Mild and mostly dry, with highs around seventeen degrees Celsius and evenings near six. A light jacket is generally enough.
