Web Summit fills the Altice Arena and the halls around it in early November, which puts tens of thousands of attendees into Parque das Nações, the riverside district built for the 1998 world exposition. It is a deliberately modern piece of Lisbon: wide walkways, a cable car along the Tagus, and almost nothing older than thirty years. The historic city, with its hills and tiled facades, starts four Metro stops away.
Humberto Delgado Airport (LIS) is unusually close to the city, and the Metro's red line runs directly from the terminal to Oriente, the station beside the Altice Arena, in about fifteen to twenty minutes with no changes. Oriente is also the main long-distance rail terminal, with trains from Porto in under three hours, and a major bus interchange.

Portuguese networks are fast, but a venue holding a crowd of this size will stretch any Wi-Fi provision to breaking point. A separate data eSIM is close to essential for anyone relying on a phone for schedules and meetings during the week. Set up an eSIM with Airalo before you board and you're online the moment you land.
Oceanário de Lisboa. One of Europe's largest aquariums sits a five-minute walk from the arena, built around a single vast central tank crossed at two levels. It absorbs about two hours and is the most convenient serious attraction to the conference site. Timed entry helps; early morning before sessions is the quietest slot. Tickets on Tiqets →
Belém. The riverside quarter west of the centre holds the Jerónimos Monastery, the Torre de Belém and the original pastéis de nata bakery, all within a few hundred metres. Reaching it takes about forty minutes by train or tram from the centre, and monastery queues are shortest at opening.
Alfama and tram 28. The oldest quarter climbs from the river in a tangle of stairways below the castle, and the historic yellow tram grinds through it on a route that has become an attraction in itself. Ride it early or walk instead; the miradouro viewpoints along the way are the real reward.
Time Out Market. The old Ribeira market hall in Cais do Sodré now houses stalls from established Lisbon chefs around communal tables. It is busy, it is not cheap, and it is the most efficient way to eat well between meetings. Twenty minutes by Metro and tram from the conference district.
How close is the airport to the venue?
Very close. The red Metro line connects the airport directly to Oriente station beside the Altice Arena in fifteen to twenty minutes, making it one of the shortest airport-to-venue transfers of any large European conference.
What is the weather like in early November?
Highs around 17 to 19°C, mild evenings, and a genuine chance of Atlantic rain. Lisbon's hills and polished pavements get slippery when wet, so shoes with grip matter.
Should accommodation be booked far ahead?
Yes. A conference of this scale absorbs a large share of the city's hotel capacity and pushes prices sharply upward, so booking months in advance is normal for that week.
