GopherConAU is Australia's Go programming language conference, returning to Sydney for its fourth edition. The programme combines international speakers and industry experts with hands-on workshops. February lands GopherConAU in the tail of a Sydney summer: long daylight, water everywhere, and harbour swimming still very much in season. The Go community here is compact and social, and the city rewards that, with most of the CBD within a short walk of the harbour and an after-session swim a realistic plan rather than an ambition. Expect heat, humidity and fierce sun.
Sydney Kingsford Smith (SYD) is about eight kilometres south of the CBD. The Airport Link train reaches Central in roughly 13 minutes, though it carries a station access fee on top of the fare. Bondi to Coogee coastal walk. Six kilometres of clifftop path linking a string of beaches and ocean pools, about two hours at an easy pace. Go early, because February sun is punishing by mid-morning. Bring water and swimmers; Bronte and Clovelly are calmer swims than Bondi itself.
Sydney Opera House tour. The interior tour explains how Utzon's shells were actually built, which tends to land well with an engineering audience. About an hour. Manly ferry. The best value harbour cruise in the city is simply the commuter ferry from Circular Quay to Manly, thirty minutes each way on a normal transit fare. Sit outside on the right leaving the Quay for the Opera House and Harbour Bridge together. Late afternoon light is the pick.
Royal Botanic Garden. Wraps around the harbour edge immediately east of the Opera House, free and open daily. Shade, sea breeze and Mrs Macquarie's Chair for the classic bridge-and-shells view. A good decompression walk of forty minutes between sessions or before an evening event.
Do I need a visa for Australia?
Most visitors need an ETA or eVisitor authorisation arranged before travel; there is no visa on arrival for tourism. Apply well ahead of the conference.
How hot does February get?
Highs typically run 25-29C with high humidity and occasional thunderstorms. UV is extreme, so sunscreen and a hat matter more than the temperature suggests.
