Heapcon takes place in Belgrade in early November, and the city tends to surprise attendees who arrive with no expectations. Belgrade sits on a ridge above the confluence of the Sava and the Danube, with a fortress at the point, a Habsburg-planned quarter on one bank and socialist-era blocks on the other. It has a reputation for going out late that survives contact with November weather.
Nikola Tesla Airport (BEG) is 18 kilometres west of the centre. The A1 minibus runs to Slavija square in about 30 minutes, city bus 72 is cheaper and slower, and taxis operate on a fixed-fare voucher system issued at the arrivals desk, which avoids negotiation. Buses and trains also connect from Novi Sad, Zagreb and Sarajevo.

Mobile data in Serbia is inexpensive locally but Serbia is outside EU roaming arrangements, so European attendees will not have their home allowance apply. An eSIM bought before travelling is the cleanest solution. Set up an eSIM with Airalo before you board and you're online the moment you land.
Belgrade Fortress and Kalemegdan. The Kalemegdan park wraps a fortress whose walls run from Roman through Ottoman and Austrian layers, ending at a promontory above the Sava-Danube confluence. It is free, open at all hours, and the view at dusk is the city's defining one. An hour and a half covers the grounds.
Nikola Tesla Museum. The museum holds Tesla's personal archive and his urn, along with working demonstrations of induction and high-voltage apparatus run by a guide. It is small, and visits follow a fixed schedule, so checking demonstration times before arriving matters. Forty-five minutes, in the centre near Slavija.
Skadarlija. A short cobbled street of nineteenth-century taverns, once the haunt of Belgrade's writers and now the traditional place to eat grilled meat with live music. It is unashamedly for visitors but the food is real, and November evenings put everyone inside under low ceilings. Book ahead for groups.
Museum of Yugoslavia. The complex in Dedinje holds Tito's mausoleum, the relay-baton collection sent from across the federation, and rotating exhibitions on a state that no longer exists. It is the most thoughtful place in the city to understand the region's twentieth century. Two hours, plus a bus or taxi from the centre.
Is Serbia in the EU or Schengen area?
Neither. Many nationalities enter visa-free for short stays, but EU roaming does not apply and border formalities exist even when arriving from neighbouring EU countries. Check requirements for your passport before booking.
What currency and payment methods are used?
The Serbian dinar. Cards work in hotels, restaurants and shops, but taxis, markets and smaller bars often want cash, and ATMs are plentiful in the centre.
What is the weather like?
Highs around 10 to 13°C in early November, damp and grey more often than not, with cold winds along the rivers. A warm coat and waterproof shoes are advisable.
