Chisinau is one of Europe's least-visited capitals, and that is much of its appeal: wide Soviet-era boulevards, generous parkland and a developer scene growing around the country's IT park. Early November brings temperatures around 5-11C and the tail end of the wine harvest season, which in Moldova is a genuinely significant event. The city is small enough that attendees will cover most of it on foot over two days.
Chisinau International Airport (KIV) sits 13km south-east of the centre, roughly 20 to 30 minutes by taxi or the number 165 bus. Direct flights connect mainly to European hubs including Vienna, Istanbul and Bucharest. Long-distance buses arrive from Iasi and Odesa. In the city, trolleybuses and minibuses cover the main routes cheaply, and ride-hailing apps operate reliably.

Stefan cel Mare Central Park. The green heart of the capital, centred on a statue of Moldova's fifteenth-century ruler and lined with chess players and book stalls. Orheiul Vechi. A cave monastery cut into a limestone cliff above the Raut river, about an hour north-east of the city. Monks still occupy part of the complex, and the surrounding landscape is open and windswept. Weekday visits are near-empty. Allow a full half-day with a driver or organised tour.
Do EU roaming rules apply in Moldova?
No. Moldova is outside the EU roaming zone, so standard EU SIM cards incur international charges. A local prepaid plan or travel eSIM is considerably cheaper.
What currency is used?
The Moldovan leu. Cards are widely accepted in central Chisinau hotels and restaurants, but cash is still expected at markets, smaller cafes and for rural transport.
Is a car needed to visit the wineries?
Not necessarily. Cricova and Milestii Mici run organised tours with transport from the city, and taxis or ride-hailing cover the short distances affordably. Self-driving is unnecessary for a conference trip.
