The laneway coffee circuit. Degraves Street, Centre Place and the alleys around Flinders Lane are where Melbourne's coffee reputation actually lives. Late summer mornings are ideal for outdoor tables. Treat it as a forty-minute wander rather than a destination, ideally before the first session.
Royal Botanic Gardens and the Tan. Thirty-eight hectares beside the Yarra just south of the centre, with the Tan running track circling the perimeter. Early March mornings are warm but not harsh. An hour covers the main lakes; add the Guilfoyle's Volcano lookout for the city skyline view.
St Kilda foreshore. Twenty-five minutes by tram from the centre to a beach promenade, a pier and a little penguin colony on the breakwater that comes ashore around dusk. Go in the evening after sessions finish, and keep well back from the rocks where the birds land.
How do I get from Melbourne Airport to the city?
