JSWORLD takes over Theater Amsterdam for one March day, which puts the conference in the Houthavens on the western waterfront rather than in the canal ring most visitors picture. That matters: the surrounding docklands are all reclaimed industry and new-build architecture, a fifteen-minute tram ride from the centre. Mid-March is early spring here, with the first bulbs out and the tourist crush still weeks away.
Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS) links to Amsterdam Centraal by direct train in 15 to 20 minutes, running through the night at reduced frequency. From Centraal, trams and buses head west toward the Houthavens in about ten minutes. The GVB network takes contactless bank cards directly at the gates. NDSM Wharf. A former shipyard across the IJ turned into a sprawl of street art, studios and waterfront bars inside the hulls of old industrial sheds. The free ferry from behind Centraal takes fifteen minutes and is itself the best cheap harbour tour in the city. Two hours, and it is the natural counterpart to a west-side venue.
Het Schip. A museum inside a 1920s Amsterdam School housing block in the Spaarndammerbuurt, ten minutes from the Houthavens on foot. The expressionist brickwork was social housing designed as sculpture, and the restored postal office interior is intact. Around ninety minutes, and it is rarely busy.
Westerpark and Het Sieraad. A converted gasworks site west of the centre combining parkland with a cultural complex of cinemas, cafes and event spaces. Mid-March brings the first real park weather of the year. An hour or two, and it sits between the Houthavens and the canal ring, making it an easy stop either way.
Rijksmuseum gardens. The gardens surrounding the national museum are free to enter without a museum ticket and hold a rotating outdoor sculpture display, with early bulbs in flower by March. How do I reach the Houthavens from Centraal?
Take a tram or bus west along the waterfront; the ride is about ten minutes. Cycling takes a similar time if you rent, and walking is roughly half an hour.
What is the weather like in mid-March?
Cool and changeable, with early spring temperatures and a good chance of wind and rain off the IJ. A windproof layer matters more than a heavy coat.
Are the IJ ferries really free?
