Laval Virtual turns the small city of Laval, in France's Mayenne department, into a meeting point for the XR industry each April. Spring brings mild days to the Mayenne river valley, and the medieval old town with its riverside quays is walkable in minutes. Unlike big-city tech fairs, the event takes over a whole town, so expect to bump into fellow attendees in cafés and to book accommodation early, including in nearby Rennes or Le Mans.
Laval is on the high-speed line between Paris and Rennes. TGV trains from Paris-Montparnasse reach Laval in roughly 1 hour 10 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes, and Rennes is about 30 minutes away by train. The nearest airports are Rennes Bretagne (RNS) and Nantes Atlantique (NTE); international visitors often fly into Paris CDG or Orly and connect by TGV. Local buses and taxis cover the town.
Skip the taxi queue — pre-book a fixed-price airport transfer with Kiwitaxi. Exploring beyond the city? compare rental cars on EconomyBookings.
French mobile networks cover Laval well; visitors from outside the EU can save on roaming by activating an eSIM before boarding their train. Set up an eSIM with Airalo before you board and you're online the moment you land.
Vieux Château and Musée d'Art Naïf. Laval's medieval castle overlooks the Mayenne river and houses a museum devoted to naïve and singular art, a nod to painter Henri Rousseau, born in Laval. Allow about an hour and a half; it is a short walk from the old town.
Jardin de la Perrine. These terraced public gardens above the river offer a rose garden, greenhouses and views over the old town. In April the spring planting is starting; it is a free, quiet place for a break between sessions, about thirty minutes on foot.
Mayenne river towpath. The towpath along the Mayenne runs through Laval past old washhouse boats and locks. It is flat and ideal for a morning run or an evening walk; follow it for as long as you like, as it continues far beyond the town.
Sainte-Suzanne. Sainte-Suzanne, a fortified hilltop village east of Laval, is listed among the Plus Beaux Villages de France. It makes a good half-day trip by car after the event, with ramparts, a château and countryside views.
Do I need a car to attend Laval Virtual?
No. Laval is directly served by TGV trains from Paris and Rennes, and the town centre is compact. A car only helps for countryside excursions.
What is the weather like in Laval in early April?
Early April in Mayenne is usually mild and changeable, roughly 8–16°C with a chance of showers, so bring a light waterproof jacket.
