Las Vegas in late October has shed the summer furnace: afternoons settle in the mid-twenties and evenings turn cool enough for a jacket, which is the difference between walking the Strip and giving up on it. A three-day Microsoft platform conference here runs on the resort-corridor logic of long indoor distances, and the genuinely interesting scenery is outside the city, in the red sandstone half an hour west.
Harry Reid International (LAS) is unusually close in, roughly 15 to 20 minutes by taxi or ride-hailing to the central Strip and slightly more to downtown. There is no rail link from the airport; designated ride-share pickup areas sit on the terminal parking levels. A monorail runs along the east side of the Strip between several resorts, useful for conference commutes.

Coverage is solid throughout the resort corridor, but convention-hall Wi-Fi buckles when thousands of attendees connect at once. Neon Museum. The boneyard downtown collects the salvaged signs of demolished casinos, and the after-dark tour, when a selection is relit, is the version worth booking. Red Rock Canyon. A scenic loop road and a set of short trails sit in Mojave sandstone about 30 kilometres west of the Strip. Timed entry reservations apply during the popular months and October temperatures make midday hiking genuinely pleasant. A rental car or tour is required; there is no transit service.
Hoover Dam. The 1930s dam on the Colorado River is 45 minutes south-east by road, with tours inside the power plant and a walkway on the bypass bridge above. Half a day covers it comfortably, and combining it with the Lake Mead shoreline makes the drive worthwhile.
High Roller and the Linq promenade. The observation wheel on the mid-Strip turns a full circle in half an hour, best at dusk when the corridor lights up but the mountains are still visible. Are the Strip walking distances manageable?
They are longer than they look. Neighbouring resorts can be a fifteen-minute walk apart through interior corridors, so allow real time between a hotel room and a session in another property.
Is a rental car needed?
Not for the conference itself, but yes for Red Rock Canyon or Hoover Dam, neither of which has public transport. Resort parking often carries a daily charge.
What does late-October weather look like?
Highs around 26 to 29°C, nights in the low teens, and almost no rain. The desert air is very dry, so drinking more water than usual makes a noticeable difference indoors.
