PyCon SK meets in mid-March at FIIT STU, the informatics faculty of the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava's Karlova Ves district, west of the old town. Spring is just arriving on the Danube, so expect crisp mornings and quiet streets before the tourist season. Bratislava is compact and affordable, and the faculty campus is a tram ride from the centre, which makes it easy to combine two days of Python talks with evenings in the old town.
Bratislava Airport (BTS) is about 10 km from the city, with city buses and taxis to the centre in roughly 20–30 minutes. Many visitors fly into Vienna International Airport (VIE) instead; direct coaches run to Bratislava in about an hour. Trains from Vienna Hauptbahnhof also take around an hour. Within the city, trams and buses connect the old town with Karlova Ves and the FIIT campus.
Skip the taxi queue — pre-book a fixed-price airport transfer with Kiwitaxi. Exploring beyond the city? compare rental cars on EconomyBookings.
Slovakia is in the EU, so EU roaming rules apply for many visitors; travellers from elsewhere can set up an eSIM before arrival to avoid roaming charges. Set up an eSIM with Airalo before you board and you're online the moment you land.
Devín Castle. The ruins of Devín Castle stand on a rock where the Morava meets the Danube, a short bus ride west of Karlova Ves. Allow two to three hours including the walk up; in March some facilities may run reduced hours, so check before going.
Bratislava Castle. The white, four-towered castle overlooks the Danube and old town. The grounds are free to wander and the views across to Petržalka are best in late afternoon; budget an hour, more if you visit the museum exhibits inside. Tickets on Tiqets →
Old Town and St Martin's Cathedral. The pedestrian old town, with Michael's Gate and St Martin's Cathedral, is ideal for a post-conference evening. It is small enough to see in an hour or two, with plenty of cafés and Slovak restaurants for group dinners.
UFO Tower at Most SNP. The saucer-shaped observation deck atop the SNP Bridge gives a panoramic view of the city and river. Go around sunset, allow about 45 minutes, and combine it with a walk along the Danube embankment.
Which airport is best for PyCon SK in Bratislava?
Bratislava Airport is closest, but Vienna International Airport often has more flights and is about an hour away by direct coach or train.
What currency is used in Slovakia?
