The International Conference on Quantum Communications, Networking, and Computing (QCNC 2027) is held in Hokkaido, Japan. The snow banks piled along the streets since December are collapsing, the ski season is winding down in the hills, and the city is a fortnight or so from its first blossom. Researchers arriving for five days on quantum communications and networking will find a grid-planned northern capital that is unusually easy to navigate, with a long-standing university research culture and daytime temperatures around 2-8C.
New Chitose Airport (CTS) lies roughly 40 kilometres south-east and handles most domestic and regional international traffic. The JR Rapid Airport train runs to Sapporo Station in about 37 minutes and is the default choice. Okadama Airport (OKD) serves a handful of Hokkaido routes much closer in. Overnight and daytime shinkansen plus limited express combinations connect Tokyo in around eight hours for those avoiding flights.

Hokkaido has solid coverage in the Sapporo basin, though it degrades quickly once you head into the mountains west of the city. Hokkaido University Botanic Garden. The university's teaching garden near Sapporo Station holds native Hokkaido flora and one of Japan's oldest museum buildings. It operates on reduced winter access into spring, so check the reopening date. The adjoining campus, with its elm avenue and Meiji-era lecture halls, is open to walk through year-round.
Moerenuma Park. Isamu Noguchi designed this entire park as a single sculpture on a former landfill north-east of the centre. The glass pyramid, the artificial Mount Moere and the geometric fountain read best when the last snow is patchy across the earthworks. Around 50 minutes from downtown by subway and bus; allow two hours.
Mount Moiwa ropeway. A cable car and mini-cable combination climbs to a 531-metre summit terrace overlooking the whole Ishikari plain. Historic Village of Hokkaido. An open-air museum in Nopporo forest that reassembles more than fifty Meiji and Taisho buildings from across the island: a fishing village, a farm settlement, a town street. Horse-drawn trams run in warmer months. It is about an hour out by train and bus, and needs half a day.
How do I reach central Sapporo from New Chitose Airport?
The JR Rapid Airport service runs directly to Sapporo Station in roughly 37 minutes and departs several times an hour. Airport buses to major hotels take about 70 minutes and cost slightly less.
Is there still snow in Sapporo in late March?
Usually yes, but in retreat. Expect banked snow at road edges, slush underfoot and daytime temperatures around 2-8C. Waterproof shoes matter more than heavy boots by this point in the season.
Can I use credit cards widely in Sapporo?
Cards are accepted at hotels, department stores and most restaurants, but smaller ramen counters, older shops and some buses remain cash-only. Carry a few thousand yen in notes as backup.
