SEV0 brings incident responders and reliability engineers to San Francisco in late October, a stretch locals often count among the best of the year: the summer fog has largely eased, skies tend to be clear and afternoons are mild. As a one-day event it suits a tight itinerary, and the compact downtown core means a hotel near Market Street puts the waterfront, the Ferry Building and most transit lines within walking distance. An extra day either side is enough to see the bay properly.
San Francisco International (SFO) is the main gateway, around 21 kilometres south of downtown; BART trains run from the international terminal to the Market Street stations in roughly 30 minutes, while taxis and ride-hailing take 25 to 45 minutes depending on traffic. Oakland (OAK), across the bay, also connects to BART and can be a useful alternative for domestic flights. San Jose (SJC) is a further option, though considerably farther from the city.

Ferry Building and the Embarcadero. The restored ferry terminal at the foot of Market Street houses a food hall of local bakers, coffee roasters and cheesemakers, and makes an easy breakfast stop before a conference day. From there the Embarcadero promenade runs north along the piers with open views of the Bay Bridge. Allow an hour, or longer on farmers' market mornings.
Alcatraz Island. The former federal penitentiary sits in the middle of the bay and is reached only by the official ferry from the Embarcadero piers. The audio tour of the cellhouse is widely regarded as excellent. Tickets regularly sell out weeks ahead, so booking well before travel matters; the round trip with time on the island takes about three hours.
Golden Gate Bridge and the Presidio. Late October often delivers the fog-free views that summer visitors miss. The bridge's pedestrian walkway is open during daylight hours, and the surrounding Presidio parkland offers trails and overlooks on the city side. Wind off the Pacific is constant, so a jacket is essential. Two hours covers a partial crossing and a walk back through the park.
California Academy of Sciences. Inside Golden Gate Park, this single building combines an aquarium, a planetarium, a natural history museum and a four-storey rainforest dome under a living roof. Is a rental car needed in San Francisco?
No. Downtown is walkable, and BART, Muni buses, streetcars and ride-hailing cover the rest of the city. Parking is scarce and expensive, so a car is more burden than help for a short conference stay.
