Vilnius in late October is cold, with early darkness and a fair chance of the first frost — conditions the city's Baroque old town, one of the largest in Eastern Europe, absorbs comfortably. The Lithuanian capital has built a substantial technology and fintech sector in recent years, and the compact UNESCO-listed centre is walkable end to end in half an hour, keeping conference logistics simple across a four-day event.
Vilnius Airport (VNO) is unusually close to the centre, around 15 minutes by taxi or a short bus or train ride. It handles mainly European routes, with Riga and Warsaw serving as common connecting points. The city centre is walkable, and trolleybuses and buses cover longer distances cheaply. Ride-hailing apps operate widely and cost considerably less than in Western Europe.

Lithuania has consistently fast mobile internet and thorough coverage across Vilnius. An eSIM set up in advance means arriving connected, which is useful given the airport's short transfer and the limited English signage outside the centre. Vilnius Old Town. A UNESCO-listed centre of Baroque churches, courtyards and cobbled lanes, largely intact and small enough to explore without a route. Gediminas Castle Tower above it gives the clearest overview. Two hours of walking, with plenty of cafés to duck into.
Užupis. A small district across the Vilnia river that declared itself an independent republic in 1997, complete with a constitution mounted on a wall in several languages. Artists' studios and bars fill the streets. Twenty minutes on foot from the centre; allow an hour.
Museum of Occupations and Freedom Fights. Housed in the former KGB headquarters, with the preserved basement prison cells forming the core of the visit. Difficult and important material covering Soviet and Nazi occupation. Centrally located on Gedimino Avenue; allow ninety minutes.
Trakai Island Castle. A red-brick fourteenth-century castle on an island in a lake, roughly 30 minutes west by bus or train. Autumn colour around the lakeshore is the season's advantage. A half-day trip including travel, and among the most photographed sites in the country. Tickets on Tiqets →
How far is Vilnius Airport from the centre?
Around 15 minutes by taxi, with buses and a short rail link also connecting to the city. It is one of Europe's closest airports to a capital centre.
