Historic Main Street St. Charles. Ten blocks of restored brick and frame buildings from the early nineteenth century, now holding independent shops and restaurants, with the First Missouri State Capitol building preserved at the northern end. Katy Trail State Park. America's longest rails-to-trails conversion runs more than three hundred kilometres across Missouri, and St. Charles is one of its eastern trailheads. The crushed-limestone surface follows the river through bluffs and bottomland. Bike rental is available in town; a two-hour out-and-back is easily done before sessions.
Gateway Arch National Park. Thirty minutes southeast in downtown St. Louis, with a tram ride inside the leg of Saarinen's arch to an observation deck at one hundred and ninety metres. Missouri Botanical Garden. In south St. Louis, roughly forty minutes away, with a landmark geodesic climatron, a fourteen-acre Japanese garden and extensive glasshouses. Late September still has strong colour in the outdoor beds. Two to three hours plus travel makes it a realistic half-day if a car is available.
