Old Town Scottsdale. Fifteen minutes east, a compact grid of galleries, southwestern craft shops and patio restaurants that stays busy into the evening. It is the most walkable dining district in the immediate area and works well for a group meal away from campus. Allow an evening.
Is a rental car necessary?
Not for Tempe itself. Light rail and rideshare cover the airport, downtown and central Phoenix. A car only helps for desert parks and day trips further out.
How hot is Tempe in mid-April?
Warm and dry, typically comfortable in the mornings and hot by mid-afternoon. Sun protection and water matter more than a jacket, though evenings cool noticeably.
How far is the Grand Canyon?
About three and a half to four hours by road each way, so it is a long full-day trip rather than an afternoon excursion.
