Late April in Nanchang is warm and humid, around 26C, just before the summer heat settles over the Gan River basin. Jiangxi's capital is less travelled than the coastal conference cities, which is part of its interest: a provincial centre with a long literary history, a significant place in modern Chinese history, and Poyang Lake - the country's largest freshwater lake - on its doorstep. Delegates should plan for heat and sudden spring rain.
Nanchang Changbei International (KHN) links to the city by metro and by taxi in roughly 40 minutes. High-speed rail is often the better route for international delegates: Nanchang West connects to Shanghai in around three and a half hours and to Guangzhou and Shenzhen in similar time, with frequent departures. The city's metro network covers the central districts and the riverfront.
Skip the taxi queue — pre-book a fixed-price airport transfer with Kiwitaxi. Exploring beyond the city? compare rental cars on EconomyBookings.
Coverage across Nanchang is good, but the usual constraints on international services apply on local networks. Arranging a travel eSIM before departure, or roaming via your home operator, keeps familiar apps working through the conference. Set up an eSIM with Airalo before you board and you're online the moment you land.
Tengwang Pavilion. The most famous of the three great towers of southern China, rebuilt many times on the Gan riverbank and immortalised in a Tang dynasty preface every Chinese schoolchild learns. Nine storeys with river views and performances on some floors. Ninety minutes, best in late afternoon. Tickets on Klook →
Bayi Uprising Memorial Hall. The museum on the 1927 Nanchang uprising, in the former hotel that served as its headquarters, central to how the city presents itself. Well laid out and free to enter with ID. An hour, and it sits right in the downtown shopping district.
Poyang Lake wetlands. China's largest freshwater lake, an hour or so north, a major migratory bird site though the great winter flocks will have left by April. The wetland landscape and lakeside villages still make a worthwhile half-day out of the city. Transport needs arranging in advance.
Meiling National Park. Forested hills west of Nanchang with temples, waterfalls and cooler air, about an hour by road - the standard local escape when the city gets hot. Trails are well made and April greenery is at its best. Half a day; go early to avoid afternoon thunderstorms. Tickets on Klook →
What is the best way to reach Nanchang?
Fly into Changbei International directly, or use high-speed rail from Shanghai (about three and a half hours) or Guangzhou, which is often simpler for long-haul arrivals.
What is the weather like in late April?
Warm and humid, around 26C, with a real chance of heavy spring showers. Light clothing plus a packable rain layer is the right combination.
Is English widely spoken?
Less so than in Beijing or Shanghai. A translation app and your destinations saved in Chinese characters make taxis and restaurants much easier.
