Early February in San Francisco is cool and often wet, with highs in the low teens Celsius and the clearest air of the year between fronts. The summit runs alongside SPIE Photonics West in the Moscone district of SoMa, a walkable stretch of convention halls, hotels and coffee bars a few blocks from the waterfront. For a computer-vision and physical-AI crowd, the concentration of hardware people in the neighbourhood that week is the real draw.
San Francisco International (SFO) connects by BART to Powell Street or Montgomery in about 30 minutes, both a short walk from Moscone. Oakland (OAK) takes roughly 45 minutes via the BART connector, and San Jose (SJC) around an hour by Caltrain or car. Within the city, Muni buses and streetcars plus BART cover the core; the venue district itself is comfortably walkable.
Skip the taxi queue — pre-book a fixed-price airport transfer with Welcome Pickups. Exploring beyond the city? compare rental cars on EconomyBookings.
Conference Wi-Fi at large Moscone events is usually workable but saturates during keynotes, and BART tunnels drop coverage entirely. An eSIM sorted before arrival gives you a fallback for demos, tethering and ride-hailing across the week. Set up an eSIM with Airalo before you board and you're online the moment you land.
SFMOMA. Directly behind Moscone on Third Street, seven floors of modern and contemporary work with a free-to-enter ground level and a living wall on the terrace. The photography holdings are especially strong. Two hours is a reasonable visit, and it is the easiest cultural stop to fit between afternoon sessions. Tickets on Tiqets →
Yerba Buena Gardens. A raised block of lawn, waterfall memorial and public art wedged between the Moscone halls, directly across from the venue. It is the standard spot for a quiet lunch or a call when the exhibition floor gets loud. Free, open daily, and needs no more than twenty minutes.
Ferry Building Marketplace. Fifteen minutes on foot northeast along Market Street, a restored terminal housing food stalls, oyster bars and roasters, with a farmers market on Saturday mornings. Good for an early breakfast before sessions start. The Embarcadero promenade outside runs north toward the piers.
Golden Gate Park. A long park stretching west across the city, holding the de Young Museum, the Japanese Tea Garden and the Academy of Sciences. February brings the first camellias and magnolias. Reachable in about 30 minutes by Muni; give it a half day rather than trying to squeeze it in. Tickets on Go City →
Which airport is best for the Moscone area?
SFO, via BART to Powell Street or Montgomery, is the most direct at roughly 30 minutes plus a short walk. Oakland works if fares are better, adding about fifteen minutes.
What should I pack for early February?
Layers and a waterproof shell. Highs typically sit around 13 to 15 Celsius with cool evenings and a decent chance of rain, and the wind off the bay makes it feel colder.
Do I need a car?
No. The venue district is walkable, BART reaches both the airport and the East Bay, and parking downtown is expensive and scarce. Ride-hailing covers anything transit misses.
