ICBCT lands in Sapporo at the very end of March, when the city pivots from winter to its short, bright spring. Odori Park has shed the last of its snow sculptures, the covered arcades off Tanukikoji are busy again, and the Susukino entertainment quarter runs late without the February festival crush. The conference sits inside a compact downtown grid where almost everything worth seeing is within two subway stops.
Flights arrive at New Chitose Airport (CTS), about 40 kilometres from the city. The fastest link is the JR Rapid Airport train into Sapporo Station, roughly 37 minutes, with frequent departures. Limousine buses serve downtown hotels directly in a little over an hour, which suits anyone with heavy luggage. Within the city, three subway lines plus a streetcar loop cover the central districts.
Skip the taxi queue — pre-book a fixed-price airport transfer with Kiwitaxi. Exploring beyond the city? compare rental cars on EconomyBookings.
Signal is strong across the downtown grid and underground shopping concourses, which matters because much of central Sapporo is navigated below street level in cold weather. Loading an eSIM before departure is simpler than sorting out a pocket wifi rental on arrival. Set up an eSIM with Airalo before you board and you're online the moment you land.
Odori Park and the Sapporo TV Tower. The kilometre-long green spine splits the city grid in two and gives the address system its north-south logic. The 1957 TV Tower at the eastern end has an observation deck at 90 metres, best at dusk when the park lamps come on. Fifteen minutes to walk the length, an hour if you go up. Tickets on Klook →
Sapporo Beer Museum and Garden. Japan's only beer museum occupies a red-brick 1890 malting house east of the centre, with a tasting counter and the Genghis Khan lamb grill halls alongside. Self-guided entry is free; the paid tour includes samples. Twenty minutes by bus or a brisk walk from Higashi-Kuyakusho-mae station.
Nijo Market. A single covered lane of seafood stalls running a couple of blocks near Odori, trading since the Meiji era. Late March is good for scallops, crab and sea urchin. Most counters open early and wind down by mid-afternoon, so treat it as a breakfast or early-lunch stop rather than an evening one.
Jozankei Onsen. A hot-spring town in a river gorge roughly an hour south-west by bus from Sapporo Station. Several ryokan sell day-use bathing without an overnight stay. Going at the tail of the cold season, with the valley still bare, is the classic way to end a conference week. Budget half a day.
What is the best way into Sapporo from the airport?
The JR Rapid Airport train reaches Sapporo Station in about 37 minutes and runs several times hourly. Limousine buses take just over an hour but stop at downtown hotels, which is easier with luggage.
What should I pack for Sapporo at the end of March?
Layers and waterproof footwear. Daytime temperatures sit around 3-9C with cold evenings, and streets are often wet from melting snow rather than fresh snowfall.
Is English widely spoken in Sapporo?
Signage on the subway, at JR stations and in major hotels is bilingual, and staff in tourist-facing businesses usually manage basic English. Smaller restaurants may not, though picture menus and vending-machine ordering are common.
