IROS 2027 brings the international robotics research community to Florence from late September into the first day of October, at the Fortezza da Basso, a Renaissance fortress turned exhibition centre on the north edge of the historic centre. Early autumn is one of the best times to visit: warm days, softer light and the grape harvest under way in the Tuscan hills. The venue is a few minutes' walk from Santa Maria Novella station, so the whole centro storico is on foot.
Florence Airport (FLR, Peretola) is about 5 km from the centre; the T2 tram runs from the airport towards the Santa Maria Novella area in roughly 20 minutes. Pisa International Airport (PSA) has more international flights and is about an hour away by train. Firenze Santa Maria Novella station, beside the Fortezza da Basso, has frequent high-speed trains to Rome, Milan and Bologna.
Skip the taxi queue — pre-book a fixed-price airport transfer with Welcome Pickups. Exploring beyond the city? compare rental cars on EconomyBookings.
Italian mobile networks cover Florence well; non-EU researchers can avoid roaming fees by activating an eSIM before arrival so maps and messages work straight away. Set up an eSIM with Airalo before you board and you're online the moment you land.
Duomo and Brunelleschi's dome. Florence Cathedral is about fifteen minutes' walk from the Fortezza. Climbing Brunelleschi's dome requires a timed reservation, which sells out in autumn; book early, and allow two hours if you add the baptistery and museum. Tickets on Tiqets →
Uffizi Galleries. The Uffizi holds masterpieces by Botticelli, Leonardo and Michelangelo. Reserve an early or late entry slot to avoid the longest queues, and budget at least two and a half hours. Tickets on Tiqets →
Oltrarno and Ponte Vecchio. Cross the Ponte Vecchio into the Oltrarno for artisan workshops, the Pitti Palace and wine bars around Santo Spirito. Late September evenings are warm enough for outdoor dining, ideal for group dinners after the sessions.
Piazzale Michelangelo. This hillside terrace above the Arno gives the classic panorama of the city. Walk or take a bus up around sunset, then continue to the quieter San Miniato al Monte church; allow about ninety minutes.
How far is the Fortezza da Basso from Florence's main station?
Very close: the Fortezza da Basso is roughly a five-minute walk from Firenze Santa Maria Novella station.
What is the weather in Florence in late September?
Late September is usually warm and pleasant, around 20–26°C by day with cooler evenings and occasional rain.
