Davos in January is a working alpine town at 1,560 metres, deep in snow and operating at its busiest. The conference lands during the Swiss high season, when the Landwasser valley fills with visitors and the town's two halves, Davos Platz and Davos Dorf, run as one long street between the mountains. Expect short daylight, sharp cold and an unusually international crowd for a town this size.
Zurich Airport (ZRH) is the main entry point, roughly two and a half to three hours away by rail. The route runs Zurich to Landquart, then the Rhaetian Railway up the valley, a scenic mountain line that operates reliably through winter. Trains are frequent and connections are timed. Driving is possible but mountain passes may require winter equipment.
Skip the taxi queue — pre-book a fixed-price airport transfer with Kiwitaxi. Exploring beyond the city? compare rental cars on Auto Europe.
Hotel Wi-Fi in Davos is solid, though mobile signal drops in the higher valleys and on the ski slopes above town. A pre-loaded eSIM avoids Swiss roaming charges, which are among the steepest in Europe for non-EU visitors. Set up an eSIM with Airalo before you board and you're online the moment you land.
Jakobshorn. A cable car from Davos Platz climbs to a broad ski and viewing area above the town, reachable in minutes from the valley floor. Non-skiers can ride up for the panorama and a mountain restaurant lunch. Go on a clear morning; afternoon cloud frequently closes the view.
Kirchner Museum. A dedicated collection of Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, the Expressionist painter who spent his later life in Davos and painted these same valleys. The building's daylight-driven design suits the work. An hour is enough, and it is a good option on a snowbound afternoon. Tickets on Tiqets →
Sertig Valley. A short bus or taxi ride south of town opens into a quiet side valley ending beneath steep rock walls, with a winter walking trail and horse-drawn sleigh rides. It offers the alpine landscape without the ski infrastructure. Half a day, and dress for significantly colder air than in town.
Rhaetian Railway. The narrow-gauge line serving Davos is a genuine engineering landmark, with sections of the wider network holding UNESCO status. Even a short return journey toward Filisur crosses spectacular viaducts. Ride in daylight during the short January window, and reserve nothing in advance for regional services.
How do I reach Davos without a car?
Fly to Zurich (ZRH) and take the train via Landquart; the full journey runs around two and a half to three hours.
How cold does it get in January?
Consistently below freezing, often well below at night. Proper winter boots and layers are essential, not optional.
Is accommodation hard to find that week?
January is peak season in Davos and rooms fill early. Booking well ahead of the conference is strongly advised.
