Amber Fort. Set on a ridge about 11 kilometres north of the old city, this sandstone and marble fort-palace is part of the UNESCO-listed Hill Forts of Rajasthan. City Palace and Jantar Mantar. These neighbours share the walled city's heart. The palace complex still houses the former royal family alongside museum galleries of textiles and arms, while Jantar Mantar is an eighteenth-century observatory of giant masonry instruments with UNESCO status. Together they fill a relaxed half day, best placed on an arrival or departure day either side of the weekend sessions.
Hawa Mahal and the old city bazaars. The honeycombed pink facade of the Palace of Winds is best photographed from the street in early morning light, before traffic builds. From there, Johari Bazaar and Bapu Bazaar spread out on foot, selling block-printed fabric, jewellery and leather juttis. Late afternoon is cooler for browsing, and an hour or two is enough for most visitors.
Nahargarh Fort at sunset. Perched on the Aravalli ridge above the city, Nahargarh is less about its interiors than its outlook: the whole grid of Jaipur spreads out below and lights up at dusk. A cab up the winding road takes around 30 to 40 minutes from the centre. Arriving an hour before sunset leaves time to walk the ramparts first.
